How To Get Started In KY

Below are general guidelines to get started. It can be an intimidating process, reach out and we can help walk you through the process each step of the way.

  • Research and decide if this is the right business for you and identify what your goals are. Review the cost, FAQ, and other industry resources listed at the bottom of this page.
  • Contact us below for a farm visit to see an operation up close and personal. It is also highly recommended to visit at least 3+ unrelated deer farms who are members of the Kentucky Alternative Livestock Association “KALA” (KALA holds members to a high ethical standard). KALA Member Directory
  • Join KALA, stay up to date with the latest regulations, education, and issues that face Kentucky’s cervid industry. JOIN
  • Construct your fencing according to the requirements outlined by the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife found HERE.
  • While constructing your fencing, find a Veterinarian that will take you on as a client. This is required for your application. Sometimes it can be challenging to find a vet, reach out to us or KALA for assistance if needed.
  • Once fencing is complete complete both of these at the same time, 1. Schedule a fencing inspection from Kentucky Fish & Wildlife (call them, Greg Watts is their personnel currently conducting these). 2. Submit an application to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. (Obtain application and more info at the Kentucky Department of Agriculture website).
  • Find and purchase the right livestock from Bonehead Whitetails or a reputable KALA member that meets your goals. This is the most critical step to having a successful business (see farm production before committing). Whoever you buy from usually provides the transportation of the livestock to your premise.
  • Stay connected with other farmers, we rely on each other continuously through issues we face on the farm and in the industry.
